Why South Africa Stays With You

As I prepare to embark on my second journey to the African continent, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experience of my trip last year to South Africa—a place that doesn’t just occupy a spot on your travel map but resonates deeply in your heart.

South Africa is a land of powerful contrasts and breathtaking beauty. Before joining my group tour, I had the pleasure of staying at the stunning One&Only Cape Town, where my day began with a luxurious breakfast of potato and onion rosti topped with avocado, spinach, and sunflower seeds—set against the majestic backdrop of Table Mountain.

The group journey itself offered a diverse range of authentic experiences and accommodations. Our group stayed at The Portswood Hotel in Cape Town and Southern Sun Rosebank in Johannesburg—comfortable but more modest than the luxury city properties. The real adventure, however, unfolded at our safari camps: Umbhaba Eco Lodge in Hazyview near Kruger National Park, a peaceful retreat surrounded by lush greenery. and the incredible Chisomo Safari Camp in the Karongwe Private Game Reserve, where nights were filled with the sounds of wild Africa.

One of the absolute unexpected joys of South Africa is its natural beauty far beyond the wildlife. The Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in Cape Town is world-renowned, a stunning sanctuary where the rich diversity of South African flora bursts into vivid color and fragrance. Further inland, the spectacular Panorama Route offers jaw-dropping sights like God’s Window, a vantage point with sweeping views that, on clear days, stretch as far as Mozambique and Swaziland. Bourke's Luck Potholes showcase nature’s artistry, with swirling rock formations shaped by centuries of flowing waters. The vast Blyde River Canyon, one of the largest canyons on Earth, and the iconic Three Rondavels—majestic peaks named after local folklore—complete this breathtaking tapestry of landscapes that feel almost otherworldly.

South Africa’s wildlife truly stole my heart. From a bull elephant charging and prompting our cautious retreat, to watching a satisfied male lion lazily ignore our presence, to witnessing a female lion hunt in action. We encountered leopards, heard stories about fierce male zebras after coming across a deceased baby zebra, and admired the beloved African penguins at Boulders Beach. Despite missing some elusive creatures like pangolins and porcupines, every moment in this wild landscape was an awe-inspiring experience. A deeply moving highlight was joining a bush walk with Karongwe’s head of the anti-poaching unit, gaining insight into their courageous work amid ongoing challenges.

Along the way, I savored unique South African cuisine—from Barakat’s modern Cape Malay slow-braised ossobuco wrapped in cabbage to hearty local dishes like tripe stew with pap and sweet bobotie pie. Our wine tastings in Stellenbosch were delightful, with favorites including the sparkling brut and award-winning cab franc, making each day’s journey as much a culinary adventure as a wildlife one.

When the group tour ended, I treated myself to some well-deserved rest and rejuvenation at Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff Johannesburg. There, I enjoyed the best massage I’ve ever had and a delicious dinner at Flames featuring Mauritian seabass ceviche and the signature pork belly with the most flavorful pap of the entire trip. Sparkling white wine and pinotage from Stellenbosch perfectly complemented the meal.

South Africa stays with you—through its stunning landscapes, soulful people, mesmerizing wildlife, and incredible food and wine. It’s a destination that invites you to rediscover your passions wherever in the world they take you.
